Sonny Olukayode Jeboda
Professor Sonny Olukayode Jeboda was born on July 12, 1944 in Odogbolu, Ogun State of Nigeria. He had his primary education at the Saint Paul’s School Breadfruit in Lagos. He took his quest for western education to the prestigious Igbobi College, Yaba, Lagos in 1957 and passed his west African Examination Council (WAEC) secondary examination in flying colours in 1961. In 1962, he moved to Ibadan Grammar School for the Higher School Certificate (HSC) course. For his post-secondary education, he proceeded to the University of Lagos (1967-1979), Royal College of Surgeons of England (1977-1978), University of London (1978-1979) and University of Oslo, Norway (March 1986 to June 1986). Professor Jeboda’s academic and professional qualification include Bachelor of Dental Surgery BDS (Lagos) – September 1973; Diploma in Dental Public Health of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (July, 1978); Master of Science (MSc) in Dental Public Health From the University of London (September, 1979); Diploma in Primary Oral Health Care (Dip. POHC) from the University of Oslo in June 1986; Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (June, 1982); Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons in the Faculty of Dental Surgeon (February, 2000); Fellowship of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons in the Division of Surgeons (November, 2007) and Fellowship of the International College of Dentists (January, 2012) The 2005 Igbobi College Old Boys Association merit awardee for excellence in Science (Dentistry) joined the services of the University of Lagos, College of Medicine as Lecturer Grade I in 1981 and he was appointed as Honorary Consultant to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital at the same time. In 1983, he became a senior Lecturer and in 1992 he rose to the position of Associate Professor. He was Promoted to the rank of Professor in 1996 and by this appointment, he became the first Nigerian to be appointed Professor of Community Dentistry. Professor Jeboda held many administrative positions while he was at the University of Lagos. He was the first alumnus of the University of Lagos Dental School (now a Faculty) to be appointed substantive College Dean of the School (1998-2002). Until that appointment, he acted in that capacity from 1993 to 1995. He was the Acting Head of the Department of Preventive Dentistry of the University of Lagos at various times between 1983 and 1993 as well as substantive Head of the same Department from August 2002 to July 2005. Outside the University of Lagos, Professor Jeboda has been Visiting Lecturer to the Faculties of Dentistry of the University of Ibadan, University of Benin and the University of Maiduguri where he is currently on appointment as contract Professor of Community Dentistry having been a Visiting Professor to the University from 2007 to 2009. At the undergraduate level, he has been an External Examiner to several Universities including Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-ife, University of Benin, University of Ibadan and currently to Kwama Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana. At the postgraduate level, he is Examiner both to the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African College of Surgeons in the Faculties of Dental Surgery of both Colleges .
